The World Water Council is an international multi-stakeholder platform established in Marseilles, France in 1996 on the initiative of renowned water specialists and international organizations, in response to an increasing concern about world water issues from the global community. With a mission to promote awareness, build political commitment and trigger action on critical water issues at all levels, including the highest decision-making level, to facilitate the efficient conservation, protection, development, planning, management and use of water in all its dimensions on an environmentally sustainable basis for the benefit of all life on earth, the World Water Council brings together the global water community by organizing the World Water Forum every three years in close collaboration with the authorities of the hosting country. The Forum is the largest international event in the field of water.

Since the organization of the 5th World Water Forum in 2009 in Istanbul, the cooperation between Turkey and the World Water Council has consistently continued and progressed. Today SUEN is a member of the World Water Council. SUEN President regularly attends the World Water Council Board of Governors meetings. The Istanbul International Water Forum (IIWF) organized by SUEN every three years aims to provide inputs to the next World Water Forum to be held in the following year. Since the 5th World Water Forum, SUEN has actively participated in the thematic, regional and political processes of the World Water Fora.
